Henry (Heinz) Inlander - oil on canvas Italian landscape - given as a gift to the vendor's husband, 124 x 196cm Provenance From Vendor - My husband, Dr Cecil Clough, met the artist Henry Inlander (1925-83) at the British School in Rome in the 1950s. Inlander was awarded a Rome scholarship in 1952 and had a one-man exhibition there in 1953. Cecil for his part had an Italian government scholarship in 1955-6 and was engaged in scholarly research in Italy throughout the decade. One assumes that they were both living at the British School when they became acquainted.
According to Cecil Inlander was dissatisfied with the painting. He didn't finish it - the faint outlines of a dog and a man's figure are just about visible - and didn't want to keep it. He gave it to Cecil who brought it back to his home in Gorsley.
