GB: Unusual military postal history - envelope containing Officer's Allowance Book, No F56851-F56875 Army Form W.3241F from Agents Messrs Cox & Co for sole use of Lt A.W. Sacre, Essex Regt, as ADC to Adgt Gen GHQ BEF France. Letter posted 23 Jan 19, shortly after Great War ended. Book was stamped by Fd Cashier GHQ for use 23 March 1919. Only one advance made for 300 Francs on 1 April 1919 against Advance of Pay slip F56851. Gen Fowke was Adjt Gen at time of letter's dispatch; a former Royal Engineer officer who rose to his distinguished position on the General Staff, BEF in 1916 and was key to many defensive/offensive actions in theatre.
